Preparing for Childbirth

Join us for an interactive and inspiring group childbirth workshop.  Pregnant participants will learn the stages of labor, know when to go to the hospital, practice coping techniques, explore pain management options and more.  This is a quick class for busy folks and is ideal for pregnant people in their second or third trimesters who are birthing for the first time or who are in need of a refresher course.  Single mothers and couples are welcome.  Preparing for Childbirth is taught by JCC Harlem partner Naima Beckles - birth expert, doula, and co-owner of For Your Birth.

Whether planning to birth in hospital, birthing center, or home, we hope to inspire our participants to enter labor and early parenting with confidence and the most current research-based information available. Our classes will focus on issues surrounding childbirth (the physiological, mental and emotional) rather than promoting any particular method for giving birth. Our classes are hands-on and engaging. Participants can expect to hear short lectures, view video clips, discuss in groups, practice comfort measures for labor, diaper a baby (doll), enjoy light refreshments during breaks, and more!

Childbirth Education for the Queer Family (June 16th & 23rd, pt. 1)

If you're interested in a more queer-centered experience and perspective, consider this workshop! This course covers all the same material as our Childbirth Education course, but also gives us a chance to celebrate and respect the unique challenges and gifts that make our families so sparkly. We will cover the many options available to empower you to make the right decisions for the safest, healthiest birth possible. It's also a great opportunity to jump into a community of other queer families embarking on the same journey as you (and maybe make some friends along the way). We have decided to offer this course so we can focus on the queer-specific experiences that may otherwise be overlooked in a class comprised of near-to-exclusive hetero couples. Otherwise, all the information covered is the same as our regularly offered workshop, so you won't be missing any crucial info if you feel this is the best option for you.
